The unique appeal of a Woodworks Douglas Fir floor

White Douglas Fir floors are renowned for their blend of aesthetic allure, longevity, and eco-friendliness. Featuring a light, creamy hue and delicate grain, they infuse spaces with warmth and charm, while their robust construction ensures resilience against heavy usage in both residential and commercial environments.

Like all our flooring solutions, our approach is uniquely tailored to our methods. We're not aiming to reinvent the wheel; rather, we strive to find more efficient and effective ways of doing things. We pride ourselves in utilizing wider and longer planks; from a meticulous selection of materials and innovative treatment processes. Our Douglas Fir floors, sustainably sourced from North Germany, have far fewer large knots and splits and wider grain patterns, showcasing an even color throughout the planks.

EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE PLANK SIZES

Our Douglas Fir floors are available in standard sizes of 8" | 200mm, 9" | 250mm, and 10" | 300mm. Additionally, we offer some impressive widths up to 18" | 460mm. These boards boast generous lengths of up to 5m/16ft.

While we can accommodate longer lengths, logistical challenges in handling and shipping often outweigh the marginal design benefits once installed. We find that opting for fixed lengths in wall-to-wall installations can be appealing, but we appreciate the aesthetic contrast achieved with staggered joints across the floor, where the grain seamlessly transitions from one end of the plank to the next.

ARTISAN FINISH SOLUTION

Our approach diverges from the norm as we abstain from utilizing either Lye-based finishes or Natural Oils on our Douglas Fir floors.

Given Douglas Fir's naturally porous nature, these open pores are susceptible to accumulating dirt, particularly problematic for lighter or white-toned floors. Maintaining a pristine appearance is a priority for many, yet achieving this with Lye or Natural Oil finishes proves challenging.

It's important to note that while washing the entire floor with Lye may be feasible in a large, empty space, it becomes nearly impossible in a furnished environment.

At Woodworks, we employ a meticulous 10-stage process for hand-finishing our Douglas Fir Floors. Though time-intensive, each element undergoes careful air-drying before proceeding to the next. Our method involves selectively removing softer grain, repeated bleaching, and applying a robust yet imperceptible layer of protection with our Naked Skin Lacquer TM. The outcome is a floor that not only exudes a completely natural appearance but also outperforms standard finishes, retaining its fresh aesthetics for years to come.

INVESTING IN AN ENGINEERED DOUGLAS FIR FLOOR

Before delving into this topic, it's important to clarify that we exclusively specialize in engineered Douglas Fir floors; solid ones are not within our scope of work. While we possess the necessary capabilities and materials for solid floor production, we have made a deliberate choice to focus solely on engineered options.

Douglas Fir, being a softwood, exhibits a broader grain structure compared to most hardwoods. Consequently, it has a higher coefficient of expansion, indicating how much its width fluctuates with changes in moisture. While such fluctuations may be tolerable in narrower width floors where a 1% change is barely noticeable, they can result in significant gaps in superwide width floors, especially when coupled with radiant or underfloor heating systems. While solid floors may come with guarantees, they cannot ensure the prevention of sizable gaps between boards.

Our engineered planks, once installed, bear no discernible difference from solid planks. They boast a substantial 1/4" | 6mm wear layer of Douglas Fir, enabling them to be sanded and restored multiple times. Additionally, they are available in impressive widths and lengths, offering both durability and aesthetic appeal.
